South Sudan Army History

From liberation struggle to national army.

The story of the South Sudan People's Defense Forces is inseparable from the story of the nation — a journey from a liberation movement to a professional army that serves and defends every citizen of South Sudan.

  1. 1983

    Founding of the SPLA

The Sudan People's Liberation Army is formed under Dr. John Garang, launching the struggle that would define a generation of South Sudanese soldiers.

  2. 2005

    Comprehensive Peace Agreement

The CPA ends decades of civil war and formally recognises the SPLA as the armed force of the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan.

  3. 2011

    Independence of South Sudan

South Sudan becomes the world's newest nation on 9 July. The SPLA transitions from a liberation movement into the regular army of a sovereign state.

  4. 2017

    Transformation programme

Institutional reforms begin to professionalise the force — codified ranks, standardised training, and modern personnel records.

  5. 2018

    Revitalised peace agreement

The R-ARCSS sets out unified command structures and the integration of forces under a single national army.

  6. 2018

    Renamed SSPDF

The Sudan People's Liberation Army is officially renamed the South Sudan People's Defense Forces, reflecting its role as a national — not partisan — institution.

  7. Today

    Integrated personnel & pay

The SSPDF adopts a digital personnel and pay platform to eliminate ghost soldiers, guarantee direct payment to every serving member, and strengthen civilian oversight.
